Statement by the President on the Occasion of Ramadan

July 8, 2013 at 10:04pm
THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 8, 2013

Statement by the President on the Occasion of Ramadan

With the start of the sacred month of Ramadan, Michelle and I extend our best wishes to Muslim communities here in the United States and around the world.

For the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims, Ramadan is a time for thoughtful reflection, fasting and devotion. It is also an opportunity for family and friends to come together and celebrate the principles that bind people of different faiths – a commitment to peace, justice, equality and compassion towards our fellow human beings. These bonds are far stronger than the differences that too often drive us apart.

This month also reminds us that freedom, dignity and opportunity are the undeniable rights of all mankind. We reflect on these universal values at a time when many citizens across the Middle East and North Africa continue to strive for these basic rights and as millions of refugees mark Ramadan far from their homes. The United States stands with those who are working to build a world where all people can write their own future and practice their faith freely, without fear of violence.

In the United States, Ramadan is a reminder that millions of Muslim Americans enrich our nation each day—serving in our government, leading scientific breakthroughs, generating jobs and caring for our neighbors in need. I have been honored to host an iftar dinner at the White House each of the past four years, and this year I look forward to welcoming Muslim Americans who are contributing to our country as entrepreneurs, activists and artists.

I wish Muslims across America and around the world a month blessed with the joys of family, peace and understanding. Ramadan Kareem.

New World Patriotism Day - Thank You!!

With Allah's Name, The Merciful Benefactor, The Merciful Redeemer

THANK YOU!

As Salaam Alaikum

We want to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to everyone who gave their time and energy to plan and participate in 2013 New World Patriotism Day Celebration!

This year's event featured Guest Speakers, BBQ, New Africa Marketplace, Children's Play Area, Games, Entertainment and More!

This tradition began July 1977, when Imam W. Deen Mohammed declared, "A great change has taken place here in America. People who just a hundred years ago couldn't stomach the sight of each other are now sitting down in the same companies, the same corporations, and working together as equals.
"I would be a fool not to recognize that I am living in a new day and in a new world."

"I would betray every slave, from the first to the last, and those former slaves who came under the Jim Crow system. I would betray all of them if I didn't stand up today and appreciate the life we have here in America.  "That's the life they cried for, that's what they begged for, that's what they struggled for - a New Day!
"A day when former slaves would be recognized and respected for what they are, and treated equally," he continued. "We have come to that day, and I would betray all of my slave parents if I didn't appreciate this America and this change that has taken place here in this America."

Imam Mohammed stated "Don't tell me I'm not happy. If you're not willing to carry this flag, you don't have to. I'll carry it!"  Imam Muhammad declared and then hoisted the American flag up from its post and affirmed:
"In your ancestors suffering and in your own suffering, you have earned a great reward! The only way you can get it is to embrace the truth! Put down your petty selfishness, your petty physical complaints, your petty racism and prejudices.
"Throw away your false self-righteousness, and you will stand up like a giant of this whole earth!"

During the years that followed, the New World Patriotism Day Celebration and Parade grew in statue and was held downtown on Michigan Avenue with participation from elected officials, mayors, marching bands, fabulous floats and various civic and community organizations.

Themes over the years included:
"Reconstruct The American Life" (1978);
"The March for Human Dignity" (1979);
"I Love My Family" (1980);
"Education Is Sacred" (1981), and others.

The mantra of the Parade Committee in those days was: "We believe it is time to consolidate our energies and skills toward the survival of our cities and neighborhoods. Therefore, we are inviting all races, creeds, colors and religions to participate in this partnership for progress."

To Our Dear Nelson Mandela

We have been closely following news, updates and information related to your health.  It gives us comfort to know you are being well taken care of during this challenging time.  Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family and our community sends messages of support.

Imam W. Among meetings the two of you shared:  in 1990 the two of you met in Oakland, CA and Imam Mohammed donated a substantial amount to aid your efforts against South African apartheid and in 1993, Imam Mohammed spoke at an event hosted by you.

G-d is blessing you.  Your influence and excellent leadership have led to great things for South Africa and all of humanity; we have all benefited from your promotion of peace and reconciliation.

We will continue our prayers for your speedy recovery.
